This alternative eliminates some purchase, but it also eliminates the friction created by having to pull all of the line through the tack cringle.

This is an interesting arrangement. Since I don't have 2 lines exiting the forward end of the boom, I'd need to fish around inside the boom and find the other end. Might be worth a try.
This system also makes it very quick and easy to de-rig the reef lines for removing the main.
I have this system, except that the forward line goes through the cringle and terminates at an eye on the side of the mast at boom level. Restores the lost purchase.
