It just wasn't practical for us as it restricted use of the settee. So it was off to the local Home Center where we purchased a round ash table top that had a bevel cut into it. I then stained it using a one part polyurethane stain that matched the interior. I applied 4 coats to get the desired finish. Bev then used 3/4" hemp rope around the beveled edge to create a fiddle. I then installed the table on the original pedestal. The cost for the project was around $36.00. If anyone decides to change the table, they should make sure that all the corners are well rounded (never use one with squared corners).

I did something very similar to your project. I bought a 24" round piece of 3/4" birch plywood from Lowes, bought the 1" "glue on" edge veneer, and some light stain (I don't remember exactly what it was, but it matched the stock table fairly well). After I glued the edge veneer (using my wife's iron to supply the heat) onto the round plywood, I sanded, stained, and applied 5 coats of clear polyurethane to both sides of the new top. Once this was done, I simply screwed the top onto the pedestal. My old table top is in the basement drinking my wine. The major difference between the above project and mine is that I don't have a rope fiddle around the top edge. Steve Alchemist #909
